Midlas: Empowering Western Australians through holistic financial and legal support
Midlas is dedicated to providing inclusive, accessible, and culturally appropriate community and legal services tailored to individuals, families, and communities across Western Australia. Their holistic approach supports people experiencing financial hardship, domestic and family violence, exploitation, abuse, neglect, and the risk of homelessness.
Beyond immediate assistance, Midlas focuses on building resilience, ensuring access to safety and social justice, and driving positive social change through advocacy, education, and legal advice.
Their financial wellbeing services cover a broad spectrum of support, helping clients navigate budgeting challenges with practical advice, tools, and resources. Midlas assists individuals in managing debt by providing options and guidance, including understanding consumer rights and addressing complaints through mechanisms such as the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) and other Ombudsmen. The organisation offers neutral information about bankruptcy and debt consolidation options and supports clients in accessing superannuation and insurance entitlements. Importantly, Midlas advocates on behalf of clients who may struggle to communicate with creditors or financial institutions, and provides assistance with applications for schemes like the WA No Interest Loan Scheme, Water Corp Water Assist, and Start Over.
As a founding partner of the Financial Wellbeing Collective (FWC) since 2015, Midlas embraced this collaborative model during a time of sector uncertainty. The FWC provided a sustainable funding pathway and fostered innovative, cooperative service delivery, aligning perfectly with Midlas’ mission.
Collaborating with the FWC enhances Midlas’ efficiency and opens up new opportunities. Access to the Central Support Unit (CSU) offers specialist roles that smaller and medium-sized not-for-profits might not have. Centralised data access is a major benefit, helping with informed decisions. Partner organisations offer support to manage challenges and demands, while sharing ideas, resources, and experiences strengthens the partnership.
Angie Perkins, CEO of Midlas shares the that partnership with the FWC is a strategic alliance rooted in shared strength. The Collective creates a collaborative environment and promotes best practices, supporting a sustainable and effective approach to delivering financial wellbeing services across Western Australia.
